As the build-up to the September 10 governorship election in Edo State intensifies, Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of buying up Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the state.
The governor, who spoke at a rally in Jattu, Etsako West Local Council area, said the act was aimed at rigging the election.
Oshiomhole alleged that, “They are going round, collecting PVCs and dropping lies,” adding “poverty cannot be cured with a dash but has to be fought on a systematic basis.” At another rally in Agenebode, the governor restated that PDP members were buying PVCs for N5, 000, asking why they would choose to use public funds to buy voter cards. He warned that anyone caught in the illegality would be prosecuted.
The highlight of the rally at Jattu was the defection of some PDP members to the APC.
The Chairman of PDP in ward 11, Sunday Edehor, who is from the same ward with APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Philip Shaibu, said they took the decision in order to support their own.
He explained that it would amount to ingratitude to continue to support the PDP, considering what they have benefited from the APC.
Edehor said since he was born, this is the first time somebody from Jattu has been made a deputy governorship candidate.
Obaseki said if voted into power, he will re-open the Leventis Farms in Agenebode, which has been closed for years, promising to offer 10, 000 jobs to the youths through the farms.
Besides, on the alleged buying of PVCs, PDP Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, denied the allegation of buying PVCs, saying on the contrary, it was the APC that was plotting to buy PVCs through what he called “Go Alert.”
He said the PDP views the plot seriously, which is why it has chosen to educate the people about it.
