political system of any state is a function of kind of military regime established and other character of the
military leader.
Generally, some military regime in Nigeria had contributed in inducing socio-economic changes as well
development programmes. The greatest achievement of the military in Nigeria is the preservation of the unity of the country under General Yakubu. The military is also credited with the creation of more states
and local government for the purpose of development and the need to bring government nearer to the
people.
Military regimes in Nigeria have also contributed in the provision of infrastructural facilities like roads,
bridges, electricity, water scheme etc They also established more Universities, local governments and
civil service reforms as well as successfully handing over to a democratically elected government in 1979.
The Buhari regime pursued a deflationary economic strategy, accompanied by fiscal control and
cutback in most areas of the economy. The regime took positive steps to better the Nigerian society. It
tackled the issues of indiscipline through the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) programme. "Though some people still quarrel with the authoritarian method of instilling discipline in the people, the truth remains
that Nigerians learnt, internalized and exhibited a higher sense of discipline in the twenty months of regime
lasted." Obikeze and Obi(2oo3) maintained that the regime fought corruption to standstill.
According to them, the fight against corruption was launched and taken quite seriously. All those that
were indicted for embezzlement and mismanagement of public funds were appropriately jailed to serve
as deterrent to others. Government business was transacted with far more transparency than in the past. The
government brought seriousness to government business "as people started taking government and government business serious once again." This was the shape contrast to the civilian government of
Shehu Shagari that was simply a government of anything goes."
