Cape Town - Four members of a Rondebosch East family were killed when their Toyota bakkie rolled on the N1 near Beaufort West.
The Parvez family were on their way home from a holiday in Sun City when the driver apparently lost contriol about 15km outside Beaufort West. Mohamad Parvez, 46, his partner Farieya, 31, and their two children, Hadiqa, 8, and 10-year-old son Sharik died at the scene; their two other children, Kaawish, 14, and 12-year-old Dayiem, were separately rushed to hospitals in George and Beaufort West just after 2pm.
Family spokesperson Rashard Davids said: “The family is doing well. Both survivors are being transported to Cape Town by ambulance.”
The Parvezes were among 13 people killed on the province’s roads on Saturday.
Four men and three women were killed when a Toyota Avanza and a Volkswagen Jetta collided head-on on the R43 between Hermanus and Bot River at about 7.30 am on Saturday. Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
Two people were killed when the driver of a car in Leeu Gamka lost control, and two men were killed and four more injured in a collision on Ou Kaapse Weg.
In Khayelitsha, 15 people were injured on Saturday when a minibus taxi lost control and overturned on the corners of Oscar Mpetha and Baden Powell roads. Seven passengers were recovering at the Khayelitsha District Hospital.
Transport and public works MEC Donald Grant said the provincial government regretted any loss of life and the crashes would be thoroughly investigated.
“We would like to send condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones,” Grant said.
Meanwhile, one person was killed and two others injured in a collision between a truck and a car on the R33 near Copeville in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.
ER24 spokesman Pieter Rossouw said: “It is believed that the truck was travelling up a hill and the light motor vehicle was coming down the hill when the two vehicles allegedly collided at a high speed.”
A woman was killed and four other people injured in a collision involving a bakkie and a car in Vanderbijlpark. Rossouw said emergency services found four occupants in the bakkie and one person in the car.
The woman was declared dead on the scene, while the other occupants of the bakkie, two men and a child of about nine years old, suffered minor to moderate injuries.
